Jessica Levin (’14), Senior Attorney at Education Law Center and Director of Public Funds Public Schools, was quoted in Education Week opposing legislation expanding private school choice and pointed to years of underfunding public schools that pre-dated and exacerbated pandemic challenges (“How the Pandemic Helped Fuel the Private School Choice Movement,” July 2). “This really emphasized the need to stop any program that diverts those limited resources away from public schools and to stop focusing on this red herring of funding private schools that aren’t going to welcome all students or serve them well.” Shayna warned against the “extension of older patterns of systemically underfunding public education and then creating a false message about failing and underperforming public schools and using that as a justification to send public funds to private schools.”
