Linda Morris (’18), Staff Attorney at the ACLU Women’s Rights Project, was quoted in an ACLU press release regarding the letter she cosigned to the City School District of Albany Board of Education warning of potential violations of the 1st and 14th Amendments, Title IX, and other laws over discriminatory dress code enforcement (“ACLU, NYCLU Warn Albany School Officials about Dress Code Enforcement against Female Athletes,” June 23). “Discriminatory dress codes reflect outdated and harmful sex stereotypes, and ultimately send a message to girls that what they wear is more important than their comfort or physical well-being. These harms are even greater for Black girls and other girls of color, who are often disproportionately targeted for dress code enforcement because of racist and sexist stereotypes about proper feminine appearance and behavior.”
