Carl Charles (’14), Senior Attorney at Lambda Legal, was consulted for a Mother Jones article as lead counsel in lawsuits across several states banning Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming care (“The Under-the-Radar Legal Battle Protecting Health Care for Trans People,” Jan. 31). With Medicaid recipients falling below an acutely low income threshold, Carl stated, “It would be basically impossible for those folks to afford gender-affirming care out of their own pocket. They are really working with incredibly limited resources.” Regarding other states with undefined policies on Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming care, he cautioned, “I do think there is a cause for concern, particularly when we’re looking at the states that don’t have explicit policies in support. Republican conservative state senators are thinking, ‘Hmm, we should take a look at our Medicaid program.’”
