Catherine Powell (’94), Professor of Law at Fordham University School of Law, published a blog post for the Council on Foreign Relations highlighting the risks of allowing technology companies to self-regulate (“Deepfake of Kamala Harris Reups Questions on Tech’s Self-Regulation,” Aug. 1). Pointing to a digitally altered video posted by Elon Musk on X (formerly Twitter), Catherine stated that Musk had “ostensibly violated his own platform’s policy on synthetic and manipulated media by failing to disclose the context of the audio being AI-generated and failing to label it as a parody.” With the current campaign season plagued by artificially generated images and spoof robocalls, Catherine noted that “women of color and from marginalized communities are disproportionately impacted by online harassment and abuse.” She urged us as a nation to “find a way to safeguard the tools of democracy, including in the digital town square.”
