Catherine Powell Reflects on Biden’s Commitment to Ending Gender-Based Violence

Catherine Powell (’94), Professor of Law at Fordham University School of Law and recent Senior Advisor on the White House Gender Policy Council, published a blog post for the Council on Foreign Relations honoring the thirtieth anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and President Biden’s ongoing commitment to the cause (“White House Event Spotlights Biden Legacy: Fighting Against Gender-Based Violence at Home and Abroad,” Sep. 30). Catherine highlighted “the tremendous impacts of VAWA, as well as the global ripple effects set in motion by this civil rights law.” Pointing to the president’s leadership establishing the first-ever White House Gender Policy Council, Catherine noted that many other countries have followed suit, issuing plans to end Gender-Based Violence. “Biden is famous for championing VAWA,” she said, “but his landmark legislation is less well-known for burgeoning into a global movement. Indeed, from launching VAWA as a senator to bolstering and expanding it as president, this foundational law is a significant part of Biden’s legacy at home and abroad.”
