Nina Perales (’90), Vice President of Litigation at Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), was quoted in a New York Times article examining arguments heard by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, which is reviewing a prior ruling that deemed the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program illegal (“Conservative States Seek to End Protections for Immigrant ‘Dreamers’,” Oct. 10). In disputing Texas’s claim that immigrants with DACA protections are a financial drain on the state, Nina said the costs that Texas points to “have no direct tie to DACA. Any person in the state of Texas, citizen or not, is entitled to the same types of services, emergency health care and public K through 12 education.”
