Vail Kohnert-Yount Weighs in on Ride-Share Drivers’ Effort to Unionize

Vail Kohnert-Yount (’20), Assistant Director, Region 9A at the United Auto Workers, was quoted in a Boston Globe article outlining the complexity of a November ballot issue in Massachusetts that would allow Uber and Lyft drivers to organize a union as independent contractors (“Uber, Lyft Ballot Measure Leaves Labor Movement Divided,” Oct. 13). Many in the labor movement are concerned that unionizing as anything less than full employees weakens the drivers’ position, while strengthening the ride-sharing companies and their gig business model. As Vail observed, “to me, this isn’t a full and real union.”
